I'm quite concerned by all the "no" votes for a one-off Aldwych start in September to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its closure (especially as I suggested starting there!). I think I had better add something to what Soup Dragon said...
Soup Dragon wrote:Just to point out it would be Aldwych plus 14 other stations as Aldwych will count as one, it's not far to run to Temple (and downhill) and also there are loads of buses you can take if you don't want to run. Also this gives you half a dozen stations to go to from Aldwych which will add to the fun. It's more for historical value as it is 15 years since Aldwych closed.
Just to try to back-up the above, the distance between Aldwych and Temple is about 300 m, which is just a little more than the distance between Aldgate East and Aldgate, which all of us run anyway.
Aldwych is around 800 m from Charing Cross, Embankment, Covent Garden and Holborn.
In the case of Charing Cross, you have a choice of no fewer than
10 buses (6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, 87, 91, 139 and 176) that leave from just outside Aldwych station, and three stops later, drop you off in Trafalgar Square. The number 176 even takes you to Leicester Square one stop after Trafalgar Square, and the numbers 6, 9, 13, 15, 23 and 136 take you to Piccadilly Circus 6 stops from Aldwych.
For Holborn, a 200 m run takes you to a bus stop from where you can take the one-stop journey on no fewer than
8 buses (1, 59, 68, 91, 168, 171, 188 and 243).
Just think of the chaos of having to decide which direction to go in! Add to that the fact that this will be the 15th anniversary, so what better than an R15 to mark the occasion?
Soup Dragon wrote:Should we have a pre-set Calendar of all dates for 2009/10 or just agree dates nearer the time, taking into account engineering works etc...?
I think it is probably better to agree on dates nearer the time, as we will all have a better idea of our other commitments and we can tailor a date to maximise attendance.
