Possible Z1 Tuesday Eve 1st April (No fooling) Marble Arch

Post by Going Underground »

There may well be an evening Z1 this coming Tuesday.....
Further details to follow but I would guess we are looking to start by 1900hrs latest and the station will be nominated in advance........
I just urgently need to see the dentist to try and cure this awful toothache, as I don't fancy running around jarring it at the moment.... :x

They have a live studio audience in to film The Apprentice? Or do you mean Adrian Chiles' after-show thing?

Yeh the Adrian Chiles thing, although we get an advance screening of this weeks episode I think, its filmed in Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.

I would be interested, I am always up for a challenge and I am available on Tuesday. Let me know if it is to go-ahead.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Considering the date, I suggest an Aldwych start.

I've got other plans, but I'm in London anyway, so depending on where you start I might pop along and wave you all off.

It's likely I'll be under the influence though.

OK the starting station is Marble Arch, although Aldwych as suggested was very tempting

We will meet at the ticket barriers as near to 18:30 hrs as possible, and aim to start by 18:45 hopefully then Steven can join us.... :D

See you there......

Not such a mad rush now as were trying to meet at 18:30hrs for Steven.... If anyone is struggling to make the 18:45hrs start send me a text......
Looks like possibly 6 of us for this one now then..........

We got underway just before 19:15hrs

Eastbound teams
Tangy
Soup Dragon/Dr Who

Westbound teams
Starkey
Going Underground/K9

The 2 Westbound teams joined forces so this became a 3 horse race........

Soupie & The Dr didn't have the best of luck on connections and fearing they would miss the last Viccie line train decided to bale out at Victoria and head down to Vauxhall, still having Sloane Square to visit....

We had been waiting at Victoria for our last train to Vauxhall (8 minutes :x ) when they arrived on the platform...

We stopped our watch at Vauxhall crossed platforms and the next Northbound was 10 mins...... So outside for a bus to Victoria and then district line to Earls Court court Soupie & The Dr stopped their watch at Sloane Square.......

Final times / finishing stations........

3rd Soup Dragon / Dr Who  Sloane Square 3hrs 31mins 03secs
2nd Starkey / K9 / Going Underground  Vauxhall 3hrs 13mins 44secs
1st Tangy  Farringdon  3hrs 00mins 15secs

Congrats to Tangy who not only came 1st with an unusual finishing station and was the only one to use the BR link Waterloo  Vauxhall but also broke the 3hr barrier having been able to re-start the watch at Bond Street giving 2hrs 57mins 40secs..... :D

Despite having to come literally from work to join up with the others, I only just made the meet up time....at 1910!

Having thought of a route beforehand, I decided to start by doing a double back at Bond Street, but due to thuer being a 4 minute wait for the next westbound (whilst THREE eastbounds called). I though stuff this and went back to Marble Arch and restarted again.

Very good connections throughout except at Euston Square whereby I got to the platform and saw a H&C dissapear along the tunnel! At this point I thought I had blown it as my ultimate goal was a sub 3 hour time.

However, I did achieve my goal but it was a bit of an anxious wait whilst waiting for my Met train to depart Aldagte as to whether I would get a three hour time or not. Came into Farringdon 15 seconds too late for the Marble Arch start but having doubled back on Bond Street I got a 02:57:40 time which I am very very pleased as it is my first ever sub 3 hour time!

Very cheeky manoeuvre young tangy, although I would have thought in a team competition event once the watch has started you would have to continue with your route regardless of any delays..........

Actually there was some kind of precedence set in Z1C 2005:
Geoff wrote:"He didn't get off to the best of starts either - as 18th placed Chris & Andrew were not alone in going in the wrong direction from the start! And Neil & I were in the same carriage at Steve at Victoria when he got out, ran to the other platform and headed back east to St. James' Park!

Fortunately for Steve, Jack was still there with his clipboard & starting clock, and was able to send Steve off again with a new start time."
Personally I think this is not good for a competition, and in the rules for this year's event this behaviour will be explicitely banned!

I guess that I've always assumed that this is an unwritten rule in any Z1 challenge, whether that is the official Z1 day or one of the alternative challenges. All teams should depart from the same station and on the first service in your desired direction. Restarting should only be an option in solo attempts when other teams aren't involved.

If we do have a very large group turn up for the official Zone 1 in May and we do need to split in to two groups with different starting times (Say Group A & Group B), then perhaps you could have best times for each group, and an overall winner.
One day I shall return!
