ELL Closure - Challenge/Last Train Day Saturday 22nd Dec

Post by Going Underground »

Ok folks as mentioned elsewhere with the closure of the ELL this is the last chance to use the lovely stretch of orange in challenge mode....

Here is the itinerary for what should be an enjoyable day.... :D

Challenge 1  South of The Thames (multi start)
Meet at Kew Gardens Station around midday and ideally aim to depart on the 12:19 Southbound.. Unless of course anyone really wants to head North
For anyone not familiar with this challenge the idea is to visit all the tube stations South of The River Thames, of which there are 33 altogether if my maths is correct...Our watches should in theory all start at the same time and stop them when the doors open at your finishing station.
This should take no longer then 3 hours and when you have finished head straight to The Captain Kidd at Wapping for brief refreshments...

Challenge 2  All Lines
We will try and leave the pub around 4pm which should allow enough time for a couple of All Lines attempts before "The Drain" closes at 18:30hrs..
For this challenge you can start and finish wherever you like, go back and start the watch again if things go wrong as many times as you want too..
For those not familiar with the rules you have to travel at least one stop on all of the tube lines..... :P

Challenge 3  South of The Thames (staggered rally start)
Meet by the ticket barriers at North Greenwich by 18:45  19:00 hrs LATEST. Lots will be drawn and the person that has No. 1 has to depart on the first westbound train leaving, No. 2 the train after that and so on....Your watch should start when the doors close on the departing train and stop when they open at your finishing station..
We will the meet up at The Railway Pub which is on Kew Gardens Station... for some much needed refreshments before heading off to the ELL for the last train:D :P

All our welcome to come and join in the whole event, or meet up later during the course of the day :D

I have 1200 words of an essay to do today, yet I can't help thinking of routes for this!

Definitely count me in for this. After looking at all my plans for that week, I think I might need carrying from the last tube to my nightbus!

My head is full of routes at the moment it is going to be a crazy couple of days with Park & Unplanned 15 on the Friday and then this little lot on the Saturday

I have only done South of the Thames once, and I tagged along in a team so it wasn't my route..... I have never tried the all lines at all...... :?

To top that work is stupidly busy right now doing 12 hour days and weekend O.T. Then add to that Christmas is around the corner and I am knowhere near ready........

Happy days though eh.. :P

As it was the closest challenge he would do to Christmas, he decided he would go for an appropriate origin station for the day:

Excellent.
Nice one Matt I love the travelcard :D

So are you planning to meet us at North Greenwich as you mention a time of 7pm..... :?:

I don't know if myself & Phillip will be able to make the first challenge as Mrs Soup Dragon is not best pleased that the next couple of weekends are being disrupted by Tube events. "It's not like an entire tube line closes every day is it" I tried to explain to Mrs SD but she was not convinced by this arguement (hey perhaps she's right the Circle Line is always closing for no reason!)

Anyhow we will do our best to get there at some stage during the day. Hopefully will make the Captn Kidd for a quick pint before heading off for the All Lines followed by the reverse South of London challenge.
One day I shall return!

Just to throw a spanner in the works there is a special train running on the saturday afternoon and a special timetable on the ELL, enthusiasts will prefer the special train stock!!!!

count me in for the 1st challenge i can just get to kew gardens for that time and a light beer before the start then i can go up the ell line for the last time and have a beer or two or three at the captain kidd.

would love to join a team though as i have never done the south of the thames before even though it sounds route planning is quite easy.

Given how little I've managed to get sorted around my house today, I think I'll have to give the first SotR that day a miss. There's an awful lot of stuff that I need to do before then (like planning routes!) and no time to do them in.

I'll be in the Captain Kidd at around three to hopefully meet you all.

scrxisi wrote:In other news, Langdon Park is now officially open - I can confirm this as I passed through and stopped there today. Congrats to Ric on claiming the "DLR38" record forevermore. I cannot rule out trying to claim the "DLR39" record for myself later today, though I consider it unlikely. Any consensus on a Guiness-style max. time happily received.
Cheers scrxisi - it's tempting to sit on the record for perpetuity and gloat, but I think at the end of the day, it's just one extra stop on an existing line, so the record should stay as just the DLR record.

Guinness even made us visit Shoreditch and T4 without resetting the record, so I can't imagine they'd have paid too much attention to an extra stop along the way. And it's a pretty soft record as it is - I've only made one serious attempt at it, and had a 5 min wait at Gallions Reach. So keep trying. Anyone who misses the record by a few seconds and wants to blame Langdon Park gets my sympathy - but if you're that close you'll get the record soon enough if you keep trying.

Thinking again about what I've got to do tomorrow, I think I should give the All Lines a miss tomorrow too. But I'll definitely be at North Greenwich before 1845 for the second South of the River challenge!
