Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
An anti Z1 would be a good idea, just visiting stations in Z2/3 and with the added problem that you cannot travel within Z1. I already ran several tests routes using this theory and it would appear that the best way to do it is to start somewhere central like Oxford Circus and then once you leave Z1 you are not allowed to re-enter. This gives challenges the puzzle of which direction to head first, and as most routes that come out seem quite circular the question of do you try and travel clockwise or anti-clockwise? I think if we all started at a station in Z2/3 you could end up with lots of similar routes.
I also like the 2 envelope challenge, 7 stations in each envelope, and you dont get to open envelope 2 until you get to the final station visited in envelope 1. There was some debate over this format already, wether everbody should head to the same station in envelope 1, or wether you just pick which is the last station you visit in this envelope.
The underground only challenge does not really appeal to me personally, the thing I like about the R15 challenge is that you get to try a lot of different connections in Z1/2 that you wouldn't normally do during any other challenge, and I prefer not being stuck underground for three hours.
Perhaps we can have a round where the last station listed is the forced finishing point, so it becomes a true race to the finishing line. Someone also suggested that we could make the arrival at the pub the finishing post for one round which is an equally good idea.

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
The only thing with the race to the pub you would know your finishing position as soon as you arrived there. At least with the last station as a forced finishing point you wouldn't necessarily know how you had done, like Z1 day where Vauxhall is generally a popular end station with people arriving and then heading off to the post meet venue at different times....
The named finishing station could be quite a wind up as well if for example Clapham North was the starting station and Clapham Common was last on the list with no other stations near them...
Not keen on the "Underground only" which I assume is just the deep level lines? But a possible twist on the idea could be "tube only" No buses/Overground etc allowed and possibly no running either, basically you cannot leave the network...
The "Royal" Challenge would really need to be done outside the context of an R15
All good stuff though, keep them coming

We could combine the anti Z1 challenge with LO, DLR & possibly some tramlink stations? Thus creating the AMAZ1NG challenge (All Modes Anti Zone 1 No Go)

I do like your idea of Underground only round (Not allowed to leave the the network) better than my original idea!Going Underground wrote:The only thing with the race to the pub you would know your finishing position as soon as you arrived there. Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
Depending on what sections of line are closed this could make the challenge extremely long. Just imagine if we had a similar set of stations to the last lot, there would be a lot of doubling back. I'm not sure as a twist this really adds anything to the challenge, It just makes it more annoying and could potentially force a lot of similar routes.jbom wrote:One for a paper travelcard. The Raven wrote:

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
What about a challenge the opposite way round?
You have to arrive at a station via a train but, you can't depart on a train
i.e you would have to run/get a bus to another station?

So would this be...The Raven wrote:What about a challenge the opposite way round?

Depart Station 1 by train,
Arrive station 2, but you have to exit and run, take bus, or comination of both.
Arrive station 3, and you can then depart by train.
Arrive station 4, and again you must exit and run/bus etc.
and so on...!

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
The selected random 15 stations by train arrive at but not depat from.
Eg. Charing Cross is a selected random station you would arrive there and leave the station
You would need to leave Charing Cross then run/bus to a diffent station (Embankment or Picadilly Cirus etc)
From the next station you can do what you want! Until the next selected station.

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
i can imagine that this challenge would take a lot longer than the standard r15 but could be quite interesting especially if say 14 stations got picked out quite close and 1 was miles away and u had to arrive by bus he he tangy would win!.The Raven wrote:The selected random 15 stations by train arrive at but not depat from.

Hello Gentlemen,
I am quite interested in this Random 15 "Competition". So what is the basic rules of this? Do you have to visit 15 random stations in the shortest amout of time? Do you work in teams/pairs/solo? Cheers in advance.
Myles

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
Hi Myles, the rules are to visit 15 random stations in the fastest possible time. You can compete as solo, pairs or larger teams. All competitors are given the same set of stations to visit, you can visit the stations in any order you like and can link up your route by running, buses, NR trains, trams...etc. The set of 15 stations are sealed in an envelope and all times start their watches when the envelope is opened, so you have no advance planning time for your route.MylesHSG wrote:Hello Gentlemen,

The whole competition is made up of six rounds, but you only take scores from your top five rounds. You dont have to commit to entering all rounds, just as many as you like. Of course the more rounds you enter the better your chance of overall success. The R15 championship is also very sociable and a great way to meet and team up with other tube challengers. We always meet afterwards for a few beers and if you wnat to take part a couple of games of darts.

Sounds excellent! Hope you dont mind a forum newbie tagging along? Can't think of a better way to spend a lovely summers day than in a dark tube tunnel
.
Um its probably best to keep me away from the dart board, especially after 3 pints of Fosters

Re: Random 15 Championship 2011/12
Three bits of good news for you Myles:
1. The R15 normally through up a good selection of stations which mean you can spend time running between stations in the sunshine!
2. When you've worked up a thirst with all that running, instead of Fosters you can enjoy a nice pint of Sam Smith's Alpine Lager. We usually visit Sam Smith's as they are amongst the cheapest pubs in London.
3. New competitors are always welcome, and if you don't want to go solo I'm sure someone will be happy to team up.
