alpha challenge (NYC style) and question

Post by cblue »

Hi all, reporting from NYC. Tube fancier, just got hooked in hearing about the Tube Challenge. I've wondered at times on how to navigate our NYC subway system in similar fashion. I've already come up with an Alphabet Challenge for NYC subways, which also incorporates numbers. We have letters A through Z, and numbers 1 through 9. My query: Would it be permissible to travel in this scenario: Trains A, B and C all are serviced at the same terminal. I could take train A, then train B, double back on B to reach the terminal, then take train C. Is traveling backward over a track I've already broken ground permissible in order to reach the next lettered train in sequence?

Thanks.

Hi cblue.

I don't see any problem with repeating a section apart from it slowing you down a bit. In fact I'm sure it would be impossible to do the London 275 in a day if you were banned from repeating any sections.

Just to check though as I'm not sure from your post, are you doing the *stations* A-Z then 1-9? It sounds like you're ordering the names of the trains/lines.

Good luck if you have a go at it.

To clarify, I'm attempting to do a version of the alphabet challenge here in NYC, tho it would have to be done by accessing every single line on the system, for at least one stop. NYC does not have zoned fares. The 3 ancient train sytems merged into one, so there are actually about 28 different lines, running from lines A to Z, and numbers 1 through 9.

There's more about our city's layout if you read up at http://www.mta.info (but this of course puts us dangerously off-topic  ) At any rate, if I had enough spare time in London, I would certainly pursue on my own or maybe even the actual challenge one May.

Thanks for the reply.

I think you've created some hybrid of the "All Lines" Challenge (use all the lines in the shortest time) and the "Alphabet" Challenge, visiting a station from each letter in alphabetical order (Arnos Grove, Barking, Cannon Town etc...)

Doubling back is perfectly permitted.

Think before posting. Not all letters and numbers are used in NYC services/lines.

I think some the replies go needless, as it's needless for me to say that I dolive in NYC and I am extremely aware not all the letters and numbers are used, and I do know the proper number of lines. At any rate, I do sit corrected and hope there will be a similar movement for challenges over here as its well established (and defended) on your turf. Thanks

sorry, i did think but misunderstood what cblue was saying.
I thought when she said A-Z she meant all letters were used, the same for numbers -- i didn't research!
