But if they suck, why use them? Why not create an independent record with criteria that make sense, without inconsistency? Perhaps if the independent record became prominent enough, Guinness would adopt it?

Not sure about you, but I think most people do the record attempts in an attempt to get an officially recognised World Record, not an attempt to get the Tubeforum.co.uk Unofficial Fastest Tube Challenge Time, which may or may not be quicker than the globally recognised World Record.

And the other question which begs to be asked is this: How do you propose to go about checking and verifying the record without enjoying the access that one presumes Guinness have to TfL's records?

You'd have to go on trust. No organisation can be expected to adjudicate on that basis.

Well they have to do something to check it. I mean if they're going to insist on sending along a team of people simply to watch a man balance pigs on his face*, then something as complex as the FNC is surely going to have to involve some checking.

My take on the whole situation is this Brown record on a Saturday 4 years ago should have been awarded i even on my 2nd attempt all those years ago had to plan for beating that time 17h 30m goodness knows why it wasnt awarded.But that is the past and i would agree with anthony if Guinness were to change their position for allowing a Saturday attempt probably only 2 times a year this is possible that any future challenger that could benefit from this then brown record should be back dated Technically i noticed that i would have to give up my first record and the browns would have to technically lose their 2nd record as well but that is hypothetical.

My take on the Kensington Olympia situation has always been the same up until December it is possible to visit ken o 9 times a day fact where certain challengers obviously dont like this because it ruins for them a starting position where they can gain benefit from fact!I should point out the this fact when geoff held the record a similar situation envolving Shoreditch with a bus connection despite the signs saying Shoreditch was closed now that made it a lot harder for people to break the record but i didnt hear the record holder at that time bleating about how unfair it was.!

Now perhaps if they close the station Guinness might come out with has to be visited by bus 28 for example in one direction from or too west ken but again this is hypothetical i think even after December they will keep the same stuff or u never kno they might even reinstate it back to what it was again hypothetical.

here is an interesting take as well i have noticed that the train coming out of ken o gets held up frequently despite nothing in its way as a free platform is there?

I think that should Olympia be only served by Tubes on weekends, then Guinness will see the poo-poo hit the extractor. They would have to do at least one of the following:

allow records to be attempted at weekends (and be inconsistent with their stance on Brown and co.)
close the record completely as being impossible to attain (and prevent perfectly good weekend attempts)
allow the record to be set without visiting Olympia (not particularly satisfying).

I think that they'd go for the first option. Then Soup Dragon will blow a fuse.

The new timetable in December will keep the current Olympia arrangements with some minor tweaks.

The weekday Olympia exhibition service is currently scheduled to run on

26/30/31 Oct
1/2/9/15/16 Nov
17/18/19/20/21 Dec

Apparently the criteria used by TfL is exhibitions with more than 6000 people expected to attend. From 2013 this will increase to more than 8000 attendees. It seems they are trying to gradually phase it out, but nothing is likely to happen in the short term.
