Christmas Park Challenge day II (Eve unplanned 15 POSTPONED)

Post by Going Underground »

OK as discussed recently on last years thread this years Annual Park Challenge wil take place on Friday 21st Dec....

The starting station this year will be Woodside PARK ...So you can start planning your routes now.... :P

A map detailing the 24 stations and the rules (forget the comment about Regents Park being closed) can be found on the link below.....

Remember you must either arrive or depart at every PARK station by tube and also take an external picture of the station as well, so don't forget your camera (or sketch pad) :D

Your stopwatch starts at the same time you take your first external photo, so who has the nerve to leave it as late as possible before rushing to the platform to board the first train :P

http://pic5.piczo.com/tubedragon/?g=19510697

Our good friend Ric is then organising an "unplanned 15" covering stations within Z1 & 2 with a meet/start time as near to 7pm as possible..
Details of the starting.meeting station to follow in due course.......

All are most welcome to attend either of both of the challenges... :D

EDIT: PLEASE MEET AS NEAR TO 10:30HRS AS POSSIBLE

Also could anyone who is coming that hasn't already given me there mobile number please PM ASAP, thanks :D

Hypothetical (as I won't be competing) - say I had a lot of nerve and left it extraordinarily late to take my picture, and ran onto the platform to see a train slamming it's doors closed in my face; could I then just restart my watch the next time a train is due in (taking, of course, another picture as I did so and timing it much better second time around)? :P
I think we discussed this last year and it was agreed that as you are taking a big risk by leaving it as late as possible there was no going back and taking your photo/starting your watch again.....

As the saying goes "that's the gamble" :D

Count me in. But I'm one of the indeterminate Subways boardies.

But annoyingly I'll have to be running off straight after we've finished to a gig, and won't be able to come to the pub afterwards :(

(Oh, I'm Jack by the way! Cheers to whoever activated my account!)

Welcome onboard Jack (my fellow Children in (K)need buddy).
Unfortunately I probably won't be able to make either of the events on Friday, but will certainly be along on Saturday 22nd for the closure of the ELL and a couple of events being planned around this.
One day I shall return!

Hey Jack good to see you finally made it onto the forum :D

I have a couple of nice ideas for the 22nd Dec that involve at least 3 visits to the pub in between challenges (all involving the ELL for the last time :( )..... I will start a new thread for this soon, but it will be around a midday start if you can tick your calendars....

Ric my friend, would you be able to run the programme for the "unplanned 15" and confirm the starting station ASAP so I can start to look at planning a Park Challenge route.....

I don't really want to finish at Moor Park is the starting station is something like New Cross... :?

Cheers :D

Ello Kev (and also welcome sven945)

I'm in Germany for the week at the moment, and of course my random station generator is on my machine back in good ol' Milton Keynes, so I'm afraid I won't be able to give you a starting station for a few days yet. Would Monday be OK, as I only get back on Sunday evening?

Agreed it will be a bit of a challenge to finish the parks challenge and then do an unplanned (in fact it's very tight given when we finished last year - are you sure they can both be done together? Think you should push back to at least 10am start on the parks for an unplanned afterwards.) In fact I'd be tempted to fix the unplanned start to somewhere you could easily get to from anywhere, e.g. Oxford Circus.

Anyway, I'll generate for you when I get back and trust you to organise appropriately.

Auf Wiedersehen,
Ric

Monday would be great Ric, yes you are right this is going to pretty tight.. what do you reckon the latest possible time to start an unplanned 15 would be maybe 1930hrs :?:

Perhaps we can push the back (or is it bring forward) the parks challenge for a 1030hrs start.. This should still hopefully allow people just about enough time to travel off peak...

Thoughts on our options here then please guys...... :?

Given that sven (plus girls) will be travelling from Uxbridge, can't we start it at Canons Park?

Sorry that's a No cos Ric started from there last year (he should have started at Wimbledon Park really) and he has a devilishly good route...... We have to travel from Ashford to lets just say we all get to Woodside Park as near to 1030hrs as humanly possible.......

OK 8) :?:

Yup, fair enough. Actually, the extra half hour helps my planning somewhat :)

Based on my last train being:
Depart: 23:40 London Euston (EUS)
Arrive: 01:46 Birmingham International (BHI)
Calling Points: 00:18 Milton Keynes Central
00:33 Northampton (Set Down Only) (at least I can sleep... slow route) :(
01:20 Rugby (Set Down Only)
01:33 Coventry (Set Down Only)
Train Company: * Virgin Trains service from London Euston to Wolverhampton
Duration: 2:06
and my fabled inability to run, is there any point me trying to make it for the unplanned 15?
(I don't particularly want to get stuck in London overnight)

Getting there isn't a problem as I break up from work at 12:30.

Well so far there have been 9 times set for the Random 15 over two different events, with the best time being around 2h56m and the worst around 3h48m. So therefore based on a 7pm start, chances are that you should be finished well before 11pm which should give you time to get back to Euston.

Failing this if you fancy a challenge you could wait until the following day, on Saturday there are several challenges being planned to mark the closure of the ELL. Full details on the events for 22nd December will be posted very shortly.
One day I shall return!

A couple of thoughts in the middle of the night here:

1) 10:30 start is fine
2)Canon's Park would be an ideal starting station for me - easier to get to and tactically better.
3) A2 - if it is touch and go, I could offer to put you up overnight in Milton Keynes as I will be driving back. It won't be the Ritz - luxury sleeping bag accommodation probably, but the offer's there if it would help.
4) Earlier, someone mentioned about missing your first train. I did this at Canon's Park last year (team of one, fumbling with camera, watch and tickets not all that easy!) I did restart, and I see no reason why this shouldn't be OK as it's a self-starting challenge like any other. Only the official GWR or annual Zone 1 events really have fixed starting times.

Guten Nacht.
