Good day one and all.......editorsfoot wrote:I will let GU do a write up when he recovers from the zone 1 but on a day of delays a good competitive challenge took place. Sadly I wasn't one of the competitive ones, doing a challenge with two broken toes isn't to be recommended.
Well let's start with the daytime challenge, which I think was made all the better with the Mornington Crescent finish

There were 3 x teams; Scrxisi (Matt), Editorsfoot (Phil) and Dr Who, Ping Pon & G.U.
The Brown clan and The Editor decided to start at Blackhorse Road and Matt set off for Great Portland Street......
We had a dreadfully slow start on The Viccy Line down to Finsbury Park and then the Piccadilly upto Turnpike Lane(including a driver change at Manor House)....... We were very tempted to go back and start again but time would have been pressing for the evening Z1.....
We said cheerio to Phil at Kings X and knocked out the stations at the east end of the network..... Our exit at Bank to run to Cannon Street seemed to take forever, I have no idea which way we went it seemed to take 5 mins to get outside the station running from the Northern Line to Central Line platforms before exiting...

All of the teams used the Bank option to do Cannon Street and also The scenic Park Royal

Matt had also ran from Warwick Avenue to Royal Oak, under the A40 and over the canal(looks very messy on the map around this area, with the A40 , mainline rail and the Grand Union Canal to navigate

The layout of the stations didn't really lead itself to bus or national rail connections, but Matt did manage to throw in the Old Street

I believe that Phil had some major problems on the route but memory escapes me now

Result
Limping in 3rd; Phil Booth, 5hrs 04mins 58secs
2nd place; Jamie. Phil & Kevin, 4hrs 29mins 54 secs
The Winner

An interesting challenge although probably not that many routes with the
finish criteria and sub 4hours is certainly possible.......
Many congrats to Matt on sweet victory.......

Ok so there we were in The Angel in the Fileds, myself sitting there smuggly having a beer or 2 after the daytime challenge......
I had already discussed Goodge Street earlier in the day with Soup Dragon and then Dr Who says "I have a route as well" All being Brown's and great minds thinking alike we all come up with an indentical route

Sit back and relax.........

Poor Matt was sitting there for nearly an hour bemoaning the starting station and rubbing out route after route with his fleece cuff on the dry marker plastic tube map.......

The sub 3 hour Z1 had been like the 4 minute mile barrier for me, and although we had a couple of "sexy" changes there were also some moderate ones and the time, although I thought might be good I wasn't expecting it to be sub 2hrs 50mins.......

So I leap off the carriage at Vauxhall shouting "get in there" and jumping up and down...... Goodness only knows what the other passengers getting off there thought

We met up after the Z1 for a bite to eat as usual and went through the times and routes declared the finishing order and headed home.
About 5 mins into the homeward journey Soup Dragon hit me with some news...... "run though our route again, we have a problem" I did this and again it all looked ok, "eh what's the problem then"
Well the schoolboy error that 3 of made independently was to miss the same station in Z1........

Tottenham Court Road.........
So we are disqualified and placed last as Antony(sic) and myself still have to complete this Z1 as we haven't been through there since.....

EDIT
Well done Matt on your best tube challenging day ever, as you did the "Double"

Hit a big service gap at Rayners Lane where I had time to make use of the facilities, take some photos and partake of a little shopping before the train arrived, and then on the Central where there was signal problems tiwxt East Acton and White City and then at Monument where someone pulled the passenger alarm.Going Underground wrote: I believe that Phil had some major problems on the route but memory escapes me now![]()

That's a good time...I had a provisional 2hr48min for the Goodge Street zone 1 that we abandoned earlier this month, I'd be interested to compare routes!Soup Dragon wrote:Provisional Result of Goodge St. Zone 1

Due to me not attending the roads and streets challenge and my mobile having a dead battery, I was unable to contact anyone, as by 1835 no-one appeared. Thus not knowing the others were running late I started my run at 1840.
My route for the first five stations was a little bizarre as it involved going south to TCR, then U turn back north up to Euston, whence I did another U turn back south to Warren Street and then ran to Euston Square!!
As usual at Euston Square, hope for a H&C and just as I got onto the platform one pulled in, excellent! Usual change at Padd for the B'loo to OXC then Central line to Queensway. At Bayswater, 1 minute for a District, an excellent change but then the base-of-the-bottle curse struck again as my train was sat in NHG for 8 minutes.......
Later on in the challenge had a slow approach into Elephant thus Lambeth North- Elephant took 6 minutes! I ended the challenge at Vauxhall nearly ending up on a Walthamstow bound train!

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!
Tangy.

Hi Jonny....jonny wrote:Can someone please confirm what the final times are for this so I can put them on my site?
Cheers
Jonny
The winner was Matt Scriven with a Goodge Street time of 3:03:21, however he reset his watch at TCR so can claim a Z1 time of 3:00:20.
2nd Place went to Martin Hazel with a time of 3:07:52, he also doubled back at TCR but I'm not sure what his time was for this.
3rd Place went to myself and Kevin visiting 63 stations in 2:48:12, missing TCR altogheter resulted in Kevin having to disqualify himself

4th Place went to Jamie & Phillip who gave up when we caught them at HSK.
One day I shall return!
