HÃ¥kan, once again I am impressed by your technical brilliance and diligence.

What the others need to do is to tell us how long they want the challenge to be, and then you can simply construct an inverse function to the one you've used, to give us the number of stations that we should be doing.

I think about 3 hours would be a good length. So my vote is for Zones 1+2 with 15 stations.

Full simulation results here:
http://lund.dyndns.org/zone1/Simulation.html

This includes 10-16 stations in addition to a fixed start point (Oxford Circus).

I've also covered all combinations of Zones 1,2 and 3. The "500" figure means the number of samples that I've generated and analysed.

So go ahead and have your pick!

This is illuminating research hwolge - thank you for your effort and brainpower in producing this.

I'd be interested in some brief details of the program; is this an extension of your GWR program? What language is it written in?

I am currently thinking towards 15 stations in Z1 and 2, as this seems to present a decent challenge, however would like the debate to continue. It may also be (especially from greatkingrat's example in the parallel thread) that Oxford Circus is not a great starting station, and a station in Z2 or at least the edge of Z1 would be better.

It's rather a much simplified version of my GWR program. I use a simple train frequency/travel time model for this, instead of a full statistical analysis of the exact time table... Actually, only the time tables are the same...

It's a C++ program (in the full GWR version it includes drawing the route on screen).

I still think OC (Argyll Street) is a good start point for the following reasons:
* It's familiar to Z1 participants and kind of tradition.
* Lot's of starting options, makes it interesting!

The drawback of a less central starting point would of course be the the same arguments, but also the fact that (I think) there would be a more obvious route - think about it! In the extreme, imagine East Putney as a start point... No, I didn't think so...

OK folks, we are trying to get an idea on numbers for this being the first event of "Tubefest 07" :D

Although the exact rules, starting time and meeting point have yet to be confirmed it is anticipated to be 15 randomly drawn stations starting in Central London around 1900hrs....

Can you please confirm if you planning to attend either by posting here, sending myself or tpfkar a PM or e-mail kevin.brown@uk.tntfreight.com :D

If there are any further questions at this stage then just fire away...... :)

tpfkar........

Any idea what the starting/meeting station and time will be?

Also are we going for 15 stations within Z1-2?

Cheers :D

Hi - sorry for not replying to recent emails as I have been away in Scotland this week.

I can confirm that we'll got for 15 stations in Zones 1 and 2 on Thursday evening, and that we will aim for a 18:45 start.

I will generate the stations over the weekend, will announce the starting/meeting station by Monday latest, and I will aim for my boss to seal the envelope with the stations in without me seeing.

Boy, it's a long time since I wrote a program like this! It's taken me most of the evening, but I'm finally there, only 15 or so minutes after the Monday I promised. Not bad for an amateur.

Anyway, I've tested it and I'm happy, so I'm about to press 'GO' which prints the starting station to screen and all others to file, ready to be printed and sealed without being viewed in the morning.

'GO'

...

The starting station is: Mansion House

Not anywhere near as bad as I had feared. (New Cross kept coming up in test runs! Although for all I know it might still be on the list somewhere....) Why don't we meet at 18:45 by the ticket barriers at Mansion House, and then we'll start the timer when the envelope with the stations in is opened.

If anyone's viewing this thread afresh, the idea is to visit a set of stations without finding out in advance which ones they are. If you're interested in taking part, either just turn up on Thursday evening, or let myself or Kevin Brown know you are coming and we'll look out for you.

See you on Thursday - I'm looking forward to seeing if this one turns out as exciting a challenge as it sounds.

Sounds exciting!

Will we get a copy each of list, will it be read out loud or will we all try to look at the list at once?

(I.e. do I need paper and pen? Do I need a helmet?)

I'll print off plenty of copies on my work printer this morning - enough to go round.

As for a helmet, hitting your head while running around the tube must surely count as a dangerous activity, so on health & safety grounds I'd recommend it ;)

Ric, are the 15 stations totally random between Z1 and Z2 or is there 10 / 5 split or something similiar :?: Cheers......

Just to confirm that I will be attending on Thursday. Is it Mansion House + 15 stations or is Mansion House included in the 15?
