Zone 1 - 29th August and 1st September
There will be two Zone 1 challenges next week. Anybody who feels like taking part is welcome to join us! If you want to come along, have a butcher's at a Tube map beforehand. The starting stations have been fixed as shown below, so your routes must start there. From there on it's a race to visit all stations in Zone 1, by Tube, as fast as possible. Here are the details:
Tuesday 29th August 2006
The starting station will be Vauxhall. Meet at 6:55pm in the Underground (as opposed to National Rail) ticket hall - at the top of the escalators, just outside the ticket barriers.
Friday 1st September 2006
The starting station will be Barbican (no, honestly not my choice!). Meet at 7pm. We'll be on one of the Underground (as opposed to National Rail) platforms, and you'll notice us because we'll be acting suspiciously: poring over Tube maps and anxiously glancing up at the destination boards.
(Also on this day is the Snake challenge - see separate topic.)

This is a challenger announcement:
Challengers are reminded that South West Trains drivers from the ASLEF and RMT unions are holding a one day stike on Tuesday 29 August.
Therefore less than one in ten trains will be running in service with NONE planned to call at Vauxhall. Please bear this in mind when planning your route to the starting point.

Re: Zone 1 - 29th August and 1st September
Just to say that 7pm is an approx time as we are not sure exactly how the long the 129 snake will take... Anyone intending to do the Z1 on 1st Sept can PM their mobile number and I will let you know if we are running late, or early you never knowStarkey7 wrote: Friday 1st September 2006

Thanks very much for letting us know, Moley. It's a good job that we're starting at Vauxhall; at least it won't mess the challenge itself up! We can of course start late if people are still held up.
After both Zone 1 things, we'll meet up at Earls Court McDonald's from about 10:30pm onwards (as has become tradition). To get there, just turn left out of Earls Court station and McDonald's is about forty yards on your left.

True, good point. I'm referring to the eastern exit. In other words, take an eastbound District train to Earls Court, and get off the front of the train. Then proceed up the steps next to you, go out of the barriers, and Bob is your uncle.
Good to hear that you're coming Ric; I'll get that record off you someday!

Not a stupid question at all. For Z1C 2005 there was an extensive discussion over then closed Queensway. The "ruling" then was that you could stop the watch at the NEXT STOP. This was decided by Geoff & Neil that organized the event. My view is that this policy should stand for any Z1 times recognised by this forum...

Sounds reasonable to me.hwolge wrote:Not a stupid question at all. For Z1C 2005 there was an extensive discussion over then closed Queensway. I agree with HÃ¥kan; it's best to be consistent. After all, it's difficult to note the exact time of a pass-through, because it depends upon where you are on the train.
We'd be glad to have you along if you can make it, Phil! Regents Park is an interesting finish; I'm going to try to work out what route you've chosen. Don't forget that there are very few (if any) trains between Waterloo and Vauxhall during our attempt, because of the South West trains drivers' strike.

You can put me down for definite for Tuesday the other half has given permission and work shouldn't take up too much time in the morning, I'm coming into Victoria from Kent, so SWT shouldn't affect me at all. Working out my route probably won't take a lot of trouble, I think that it has been used before.Starkey7 wrote:Regents Park is an interesting finish; I'm going to try to work out what route you've chosen. As posted elsewhere I came home in a time of 3hrs 0 mins 28 secs, sadly only good enough for third out of five teams, but a new PB for me.
I had a slightly different route to the others, choosing to go round the Elephant & Castle, Southwark loop before heading on to Aldgate. Delays were reasonably minor, 3 mins at Westminster, slow train to Southwark, 3mins at Elephant & Castle and about 5 at Bayswater.
I met up with Starkey & Paul at Euston and we went round together, meaning I saw a true tube challenging 'moment' but I will let Starkey explain that.
Now if only Regents Park had been open, I would have got a sub 3 hour time, but sadly it was not to be.
Shame I can't be with you on Friday.
