The Definitive (?) Poll
Posted: 11 Jun 2006, 00:17
I hope this poll can prove definitive and put an end to the discussion, but of course that is up to you. At the very least I hope it can give a consistent guideline to anyone who wants to attempt the now infamous...
BOTTLE CHALLENGE.
So, you are fully aware what the issue is here: Should Marylebone and Edgware Road on the Bakerloo line be deemed inside or outside of the "bottle" that is formed of the Circle line and everything inside it?
The implications are straightforward. If they are deemed to be inside, challengers attempting to do "the bottle" will be required to visit them. Conversely, if they are declared to be outside, then they can be ignored.
I think every possible argument for and against their inclusion has been brought up, so I will give a brief outline of the main points here to avoid the need for them to come up in this thread again.
For their inclusion:
Going by the standard London Underground map, they are inside the "bottle".
Most challengers who have attempted the "bottle" so far have visited them, so to exclude them now would de-value the current records.
Geographically, the Circle line does not really resemble a bottle, so the whole challenge is based on the map.
Against their inclusion:
Geographically, they are outside of the Circle line, which makes up the "bottle".
On some alternate maps they are outside of the "bottle".
Maps are always changing, while geographically they have not moved - it is more consistent to exlude them.
Now, I don't want to see anyone else posting their arguments no matter what their stance - if you really must discuss it further, see the "Bottle Challenge Question" thread. Simply vote Yes or No, and if you want to declare how you voted them do so, but post nothing else.
And finally, regardless of what you think the rules should be, I urge you to follow the result of this poll if you ever attempt the challenge, at least if you want your time to be considered official and go on the list of records.
This poll will have to end at some point, so I will arbitrarily say the end of June. That should be enough time for everyone who cares to vote.
