Amersham or Chesham
I have often heard people say 'start at Amersham, not Chesham' and have often wondered why. I was also wondering if any of you could help! I think Chesham is better, as it is a longer gap between Chalfont than Amersham, meaning it is quicker to double-back at Amersham rather than Chesham. Let me know if you disagree!

Re: Amersham or Chesham
It depends on the timetables!! Chesham is every 30 minutes, Amersham isn't much better (only because Chiltern comes into play)...

Re: Amersham or Chesham
You're right - with the 8 minute double back plus a wait to reverse at Chesham, it's usually slower, but occasionally it works. As you get Chilterns coming through at Amersham, and there's a reversing siding, the wait at Amersham may be shorter.
There's at least one other option for a NW start that's been used as part of a route before now

As for helping - why not play with the timetables and see what works for you?!

Iain - what is that other option? Because I can't see Watford being a good start unless you manage to go round the North Curve. Or is that it? Watford to Chesham/Amersham via North Curve.

Re: Amersham or Chesham
Give me one clue: When was the attempt made with that route. If I know that, I can work it out myself

Re: Amersham or Chesham
What, by looking it up on here? None of us were given any clues or hints, we had to sit down and work it out the hard way with a tube map and pen and umpteen references to timetables.
For what it's worth, the attempt was made at some point between 1 January 2003 and 1 April 2016.

As Steveo says, play with it
A start that works well one year may not work as well after a timetable change, but they're worth knowing

Re: Amersham or Chesham
I do have a route (Chesham - Upminster), but started this topic to see is Amersham - Upminster would be quicker. I went a bit off-topic, though!

Re: Amersham or Chesham
It's in theory possible for a slightly slower start (I normally time down to N Harrow) to give a faster overall time as the rest of the network synchs up better.
