Website Change

I have completely redone the website.

http://www.jonnylyon.net/tubechallenge

It is now done (would you believe) in Excel, using the Excel 'Save as Web Page' option. The tables are each in individual Excel worksheets (but all in the same workbook), thus you will notice a navigation bar listing all the worksheets along the bottom. I have included 'View' links alongside each of the descriptions.

I anticipate that moving to a site done in Excel will make it much easier to add new scores, fiddle with configurations (the old site was getting quite confusing, especially with the All Stations challenge), and add new challenges in altogether.

You will also notice that the Player Profiles feature has gone (it was pretty much defunct anyway). I may reintroduce it if I can see a practical way of doing so.

I realise that the site is now a lot less 'good looking', but I hope you'll find that it is from now on more reliable.

I still have the previous site available (you can still access it via http://www.jonnylyon.net/tubechallenge/index2.htm ) if you guys think I should switch back.

If you think you may have an out of date table displaying, or if it doesnt format correctly, click 'Refresh' or 'Reload' and hopefully that should get you the latest version of the table. If you still find that the table is wrong, please email or PM me so that I can update the data.

By the way, I havent added the Zone 1 2008 scores yet, that will be done soon.

Thanks

Jonny

Much of the text is overlapping, thus is difficult to read, and it's not a particularly easy site to navigate around any more. Oh, and some pages cannot be found when I click links.

So in short, I prefer the old one, although the new one does have an advantage: sometimes when I'm challenging, I will use my mobile phone's WAP text-only browser to try and find out the top times for whatever challenge I am doing at the time. Because of the Javascript in your old site (or whatever it was), I couldn't see anything - now I can.

Perhaps a compromise could be reached?

That's interesting, I wasn't aware of any text overlapping. And for me all the pages seem to be there.

But if this site isn't suitable, I shall return to the old one.

Also, I've always had http://www.jonnylyon.net/tcwap set up for the old site so that text-only viewers should be able to view the tables. It's not currently completely up to date because I didnt think anyone wanted it, but if you do I would happily maintain that.

I shall continue thinking of a new, easier way to host the tables.

EDIT: If you could give me an example of where text overlaps (and perhaps say what browser you're using as that may affect things) I shall try and work out why. It may otherwise be that refreshing the page solves the problem.

OK, I'll leave it like that for now, but I am also working on an editthis.info wiki site that would also allow members to add times to the tables. It probably won't allow WAP access though so I'll knock up a quick one and see if it's worth taking it any further to replace the current one.

Well if you're interested I've made a start on a wiki idea.

http://editthis.info/tube_challenge/Main_Page

You will notice that I've only put the tables in for two challenges - but it gives a good idea of what the finished product would be like. If you dont like it I wont bother finishing it.

Also, if I were to continue with that and use it I would redirect to it from jonnylyon.net/tubechallenge, as that URL above is rather a mouthful.

I think the idea of a Tube Challenge Wiki is a good one, but I thought that the administrators of this site were already working on one?

One of the administrators of this site started such an idea but couldn't be arsed due to more pressing committments and so abandoned the idea.

I have no idea what the other one is doing vis a vis Wiki.

On the subject of "couldn't be arsed"...

If said administrator could install some Wiki software and tell us the URL, he would not need to do anything else :).

Indeed, this was my impression. But you must understand I'm just experimenting with different ideas. If you dont like it, say so and i'll try and think of something else. If anyone else has any ideas, post them below!

The Tube Challenge Wiki is a good idea but I do feel it should be based around this site not on outside ones or at least linked to directly from this website as it won't get the coverage it needs unless it is on here. Tbh until today I'd never heard of editthis.info but apart from that all ok!

Thanks for your comments.

Certainly, I shall have a go at doing that. And I'll recount the zone 1 stations! Unless someone can tell me what the correct number is without counting!
