Grange Hill was on my short list too. I had wondered about Pauline Quirke, but the question asks for the character rather than the person. Or the crew Christmas Party outtakes for something like Jackanory or Play School. Or John Noakes when Lulu (not that one) trod on his foot.

No,none of those. But yes, definitely a character, rather than an actor/actress or presenter, is what I'm looking for here.

Incidentally apparently the elephant didn't step on John Noakes's foot - he just said "Get off my foot" to play to the camera!

It was scripted in English, but 'spoken' in another 'language'.

David C has it - it was Major Clanger!

Although the 'language' of the Clangers was played on swannee whistles, in order to give a rhythm to what the characters were saying, their lines were 'scripted' in English.

Apparently one BBC exec on seeing the script said "You can't say that on children's TV!" unaware of how it was going to be 'read'.

Well deduced, DavidC!

How about this:

What is known in English by a French name given to it by an Italian to reflect its German origin?

I don't think France originated in Germany!

This is something that was invented by an Italian living in a German city, and named after that city, but in French. English also uses the French name, though we pronounce it differently.

I thought that was a decent guess related to the Franks ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France#Etymology

Is it related to food and drink ?

Was going on the fact that "Francia" (named in Latin), was the area that is southern France and eastern Germany.
