Who is the only songwriter to write four successive US Billboard Hot 100 No.1 hits? (That is: one of their songs was knocked from no.1 by one of their songs, which was knocked from no.1 by one of their songs, which was knocked from no.1 by one of their songs)

The 6th has a famous sporting trophy named after him. The 15th was a famous author. The 23rd and the 27th both officially opened an Olympic Games. The 29th was a former astronaut. Holders of what post?

My first thought - given the timing - was American Presidents, but clearly Warren G. Harding (d 1923) was never an astronaut!

Close by the US though is Canada - could it be General Governers of Canada?

Correct - Governors general of Canada, since independence in 1867.
The 6th was Lord Stanley who bought (on Regent Street) and donated the cup that the NHL now fight over.
The 15th was John Buchan, author of the 39 Steps.
The 23rd and 27th opened an Olympic Games because of their post, as representative of the monarch. The one time the Summer Olympics were held in Canada, Montreal 1976, QE2 opened it herself, but the two times the Winter Olympics were held there it was up to the Governor general - Jeanne Sauve at Calgary 1988 and Michaelle Jean at Vancouver 2010.
The 29th, the one before the current, was Julie Payette who went to the ISS twice.

As you've probably seen, the latest ORR rail usage statistics (for April 2022 to March 2023) have just been released, and the opening of the Elizabeth line has had a big impact.
What you may not have seen is the summary of the busiest flow - the most journeys between a pair of stations in both directions. Four of the ten busiest are only served by the Elizabeth line, including the number 1, Liverpool Street and Tottenham Court Road (5.8 million).
What is the busiest flow where both stations are outside London?
According to the latest statistics, just released, the answer is now Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street (2.4 million), followed by last year's leader Birmingham New Street and Coventry (2.3 million).

Are they the sole writers of all four songs, or was at least one of them co-written?

They were all co-written with other people. Three of the four songs were written by the same group of people, but the fourth was written by one of them with somebody else.
