Correct - you've got the theme.

For question 1 surely there are thousands of "correct" answers as a lot happened in each month.

For Instance:
Edward VIII became king in January of which year?
George VI became king in December of which year?

The question is not about the month! Perhaps I should change the answer to "October 1936".

(I think we should take it as a general rule in this game that the theme word is never to be taken literally.)

Sorry, no. The question needs to contain the name of a month, but not a reference to the actual month (if you see what I mean).
