When I mentioned having a percentage-based system before, everyone was against it...

Im all for keeping it simple, we have a competition lasting 20 quizzes, if you join mid competition then hard luck. However if we want this to keep going then we will all have to take a share in supplying photos which is why I will try and get out next week with my camera and I promise not to put them on my website before!

Edit: Argh. Two pages! Errrrrr...

Edit: I reckon there are so many photos on the Internet that it is possible that a full round of quizzes can be answered without anyone ever finding the same photo - provided that the quizmaster is wily enough to dig deep for the photo in the first place!

Can we make a minimum size for the pictures (say 600*400 pixels) to give people a fighting chance too?

I took a fair number of pictures over the last few days (and will do more on Sunday) so I've got enough to keep me going for a while...

I agree, James. It's definitely worth making sure the photos are big enough.

If you look at my Pics you will see they are the same size every week, not sure what that size is thought!

Yep Soup Dragon that was exactly what I meant.

The reason for that was that we had people joining in at various stages in the game (ie various people have joined as late as quiz 40!) which meant that it was impossible to come up with a fair percentage based system. If everyone starts at the same time then I think percentages are the fairest possible way of playing. Personally I think we should do that from round 51 onwards, but it's up to you lot really.

Well, why not try this 20-quiz percentage system then? It sounds good to me.

I'm not sure percentages are fairer on everyone because somone who has answered 18/20 correct and someone who answered 9/10 correct well in my opinion the person who got 18 correct should be placed above the person who got 9 correct. So if a percentages scheme came in i think if there was a tie with people on the same percentages the person who answered more correctly wins.

Yeah, there isn't a perfect way of doing this IMO - there will always be unfairnesses. I think the idea of ranking via percentage then correct answers will be used.

The problem with rating by percentages is that it discourages people from guessing if they're not 100% certain of the answer. And for me, the interestingly-wrong answers are where a lot of the fun comes from...

True, but the idea we're using is to have a percentage system where every quiz is included (from the start of round 2). Therefore if you don't enter that automatically goes down as an incorrect answer. Basically, you play from the start til the end of each round (1 round = 20 quizzes). You are welcome to join mid-round, but you will be automatically wrong for all quizzes up to that point.

Sorry for the double post, just thought it worth confirming that if you post a quiz photo, that quiz is not included in your percentages. That's why the 9/10 - 18/20 difference is being discussed.

If you really want a compromise, why not divide the number of correct answers by the square root of the total number of guesses? This'll get you somewhere in between absolute and proportional scoring.

I think you'rte overcomplicating things there, Starkey. What you SHOULD do is divide the number of incorrect answers by the factorial of the correct answers, and then having squared the remainder, prove the binomial theorem.
