Surely on a full network attempt he would have visited every station? Therefore knowing the date doesn't help narrow it down.
It does, but only a little. You see, a lot of full network attempts have been partly documented on this forum, and if you knew which attempt that photo is from, you could use shadow lengths and so on to work out what time of day it was, and therefore narrow down where he was.
Extremely tenuous though, and not likely to give anything away to anyone except for one or two notable stattos!
