I read somewhere that the timing policy has changed with the latest software rollout, including additional time for each time a zone is passed through. I'll try and find my source...

The current time limits are

Monday - Friday before 1900 hrs
Travel within one zone - 70 mins
Each additional zone (e.g. a journey from Zone 6 to Zone 6 via Zone 1,
would be 10 additional zones) - 10 mins

Monday to Friday after 1900 and Saturday
Travel within one zone - 77 mins
Each additional zone - 11 mins

Sunday
Travel within one zone - 84 mins
Each additional zone - 12 mins

Well that's hardly fair if you're going from Earls Court to Baker Street. That takes well over two hours on a normal sub-service surface.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I see Edgemaster mentioned that PAYG was valid from Victoria to Balham, but am I right in thinking this still hasn't actually be put into operation?

I believe you can get these from vending machines at some tube stations now for £3.00, sure I saw one at Earls Court. Does anyone know which stations have these vending machines the nearest to Hatton X / Richmond area?

Don't you have to fill forms out if you buy them from ticket office / newsagents?

Only if you wish to register it to protect your money. I recommend passengers do this as it covers them if they lose their card or it gets stolen but it's not compulsory!

Oh yeah, also needs to be registered for month or longer season tickets and if you wish to add a railcard/discount to the card

Hang on, you can get student discount on an Oyster Card? As I've now got an NUS card (admittedly not a London Uni) can I apply for a discounted Oyster Card? I've never bothered before with an Oyster as:

A) I've not been a London student to get the child/sixth former discount.
B) I would rarely use it outside of a challenge when it's often better to get a day travel-card.

If what I've written or implied is far the truth, it's purely as it's never been an option for me to have one previously, so I've never looked at it too deeply, but it soon could be. (And before anyone slates me for not investigating the answer myself on the TfL website - it's purely because I've previously found the Oyster sections nightmarish and had little need to look at it in the first place, so I'll probably get the answer quicker here!)

As far as i'm aware, you can only get a student oystercard if you are at a London university...
When I got mine a few years ago, I had to get a form from the university which was signed by them and then I got sent it.
I was talking more about 16-25 railcards/senior railcards/new deal railcards/bus & tram discount
