Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
Bahrain has come up with exciting races in the past and it's one of my favourites. It's just in 2010 they modified a great overtaking place. Thankfully they've reverted it back.

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
Bahrain has already been a big source of controversy. At least, it's ahead of the Mercedes FWFD. It made the main story on the BBC sport website, for example, which the Mercedes thing never did. The teams said they were expecting it to be called off, and various pundits and experts have been saying it should be.
If you only watch the race coverage it might not seem like a big deal, but at least on the F1 website I visit every day it's been dominating the top half a dozen stories in every day's round-up of news.
It's true that I have a vested interest in this...

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
OK, so we're one fifth of the way through the season already, but predicting anything is turning into pot luck. Here's how it looks after Bahrain.
Who will win the Driver's Championship?
Charles Pic probably, at this rate.
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
Red Bull lead McLaren, but it's not settled down yet.
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
STILL no sign on number 92. Again.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
Only Tubeguru can win the point for this category, as Raikkonen finished second. The only way I can lose it is if he wins one.
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
Vergne was the top rookie with four points going into this race, but Grosjean's third place blows him out of the water, and I suspect that's the way it will stay until the end of the season.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
With the teams above them now settled, unbelievably Marussia's 14th place in Australia is STILL the benchmark for these three teams. And none of them look like getting anywhere near it at the moment.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
This one's still wide open.
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
The W-duct argument appears to have gone, as the FIA have ruled it legal, and Red Bull have found some kind of copy. The Bahrain GP certainly made a few headlines this week, with just about everyone who had a soapbox ranting on about it. So I think Bahrain moves ahead here. But no points for anyone who said it would be cancelled.
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
Massa is improving with each race this year. Webber can't finish outside fourth place. I think this one will go to nearer the end of the season.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
Four winners from four races - the closest it's been for years at this stage.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
No news of teams running short of cash yet ...
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
We'll need a few more races to get an idea on this one.
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
Four races, four crackers. I still think China was the best so far, and Bahrain was a shoe-in for being boring, but I think it was actually better than Australia.
So, Exciting: China. Boring: Australia. Plenty more to come ...
Your own prediction that is not covered by anything above. Take a shot at something that will or won't happen this year that isn't covered by the previous 13 questions and see if you strike it lucky!
Steeeeevooooooo said "there will be a protest ... during the Bahrain GP". Now there was indeed a protest going on OUTSIDE the circuit during the race. But as he didn't specify WHERE the protest would happen, I have to give him a point for this, as he was technically correct. Let's be fair - security was going to be tight at the circuit for this one, so it was never going to happen INSIDE.
As for everyone else, the race which was most likely to be cancelled has passed, so we're now waiting for the safety car to crash ...
Team mate head to heads:
These are based on who finishes higher of the two team mates in each race. A non-finish for both will be decided on qualifying position.
Button 2, Hamilton 2
Vettel 2, Webber 2
Alonso 4, Massa 0
Rosberg 3, Schumacher 1
Raikkonen 3, Grosjean 1
di Resta 4, Hulkenberg 0
Koboyashi 2, Perez 2
Vergne 3, Ricciardo 1
Senna 3, Maldonaldo 1
Petrov 3, Kovalainen 1
Glock 4, Pic 0
de la Rosa 4, Kartikeyan 0
Carry on.

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
Who will win the Driver's Championship?
Er ...
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
Red Bull are still in the lead, despite some dodgy performances
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
Not driving like that he won't.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
An average showing from Raikkonen leaves me still winning the point for this one.
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
I think Grosjean has this one sewn up now.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
Australia looks a long time ago now. Marussia's 14th place at that race will probably remain the best result from the new teams, but Monaco is coming up next.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
The obvious names remain in contention, but Senna is under pressure from the guy who keeps getting his car for Friday practice. Whatever his name is ...
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
It was all a bit quiet on the controversy front this weekend.
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
scrxisi has the lowest-numbered race here - round 12. We're not even halfway to that yet. It's looking more likely that Massa is going bye-bye in favour of Perez for next year, so it's just a question of when they announce it.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
Five winners from five races - one more different winner and we have an all-time F1 record for different winners at the start of a season. This one's going to be close all the way.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
All 20 still there.
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
We're halfway to the halfway point of the season, but you can't really say yet, can you?
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
Well, Spain is generally rubbish, but the tyres and DRS have gone some way to liven it up, but it felt artificially so. Therefore, I am going to deem this race as boring, but how does it compare to Australia? This race felt more "exciting" due to the winner, the incidents, and the fact that in Australia the tyres hadn't started to show their tendency to fall apart after one lap. So ...
Most exciting: China. Most boring: Australia.
Your own prediction that is not covered by anything above. Take a shot at something that will or won't happen this year that isn't covered by the previous 13 questions and see if you strike it lucky!
Root's suggestion that Maldonaldo would have trouble with his sponsorship money might not come true, as his sponsors will pump a load of cash into Williams now they have pace and he has won a race. And they wouldn't drop a race winner would they?
As for everyone else, nothing doing.

Monaco update:
Who will win the Driver's Championship?
Er ...
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
If McLaren keep up this level of performance then it's Red Bull's for the taking.
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
Well, he was the fastest car in Q3, and then had a series of setbacks. But he and Raikkonen are looking set fair for something to go their way at some point this year.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
Nowhere near improving on second this weekend, so my point is safe for now!
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
Despite a crash at the start he's still a shoe-in for this one.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
If there was one race which would blow Marussia's Australian 14th place out of the water, it was the Monaco GP. And so it proved. Caterham grabbed 13th place, and THAT now looks impossible to beat for the other two, barring a crazy race later in the season. So whoever said Caterham is going to get a point if it stays like this.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
Massa was on fire this weekend, helping his chances of remaining at Ferrari for the balance of the season. Senna put in a non-performance, but Karthikeyan remains the favourite here.
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
Well the W-Duct thing fizzled out, and now we have the "hole-where-there-shouldn't-be-a-hole" with Red Bull. But the teams who said they weren't happy with it (NOT including Mercedes, interestingly) did not protest the car after the race, so a bit of a dud here.
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
With Perez stating that he wants more experience before being catapulted into Ferrari (even as early as 2013), Massa looks safer after this showing. Webber won't be pushed, but will be be the stop-gap at Ferrari in 2013, keeping Perez's seat warm for 2014? It's all rumour at this stage.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
Six from six - this one is going to be a close battle all the way with these tyres.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
I'd say yes now.
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
Alonso. No, Vettel. No, Hamilton. No, Button. No, Rosberg. No, Pic. You couldn't possibly know.
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
This one's easy - most boring race of the year when compared to the others.

Er ...
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
Er ...
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
Well he looks as if he could do it, if only Mercedes could stop cocking him around.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
Second place remains the best.
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
Grosjean has cemented this one now.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
The bottom three were way down the field at this one. Caterham's 13th place remains the score to beat.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
We're approaching the time of the year when teams start moving their drivers around a bit. But it's hard to say who's going to be first out.
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
Red Bull have been forced to modify their car, so it's as dead as the Mercedes W-Duct argument. Nothing's really caught the attention this year. But with more and more people now moaning about the races being all about tyres and DRS, maybe THAT will be the biggest overall row.
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
No idea.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
I think it's safe to say that this one is going to be a close battle right to the end.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
Still all there ...
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
Alonso. No, Vettel. No, Hamilton. No, Button. No, Rosberg. No, Pic. No, Lauda. No, Fangio. No, Mansell. No, Tubeguru. It's anyone's.
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
The race was more exciting than Monaco, but a lot of people felt that Hamilton's charge through to the win was a bit artificial, given his superior tyres and DRS. But it wasn't as bad as Monaco, so no change here.
Most exciting: China. Most boring: Monaco.

Your own prediction that is not covered by anything above. Take a shot at something that will or won't happen this year that isn't covered by the previous 13 questions and see if you strike it lucky!
Nothing.
Team mate head to heads:
These are based on who finishes higher of the two team mates in each race. A non-finish for both will be decided on qualifying position.
Hamilton 5, Button 2
Vettel 4, Webber 3
Alonso 7, Massa 0
Rosberg 6, Schumacher 1
Raikkonen 5, Grosjean 2
di Resta 5, Hulkenberg 2
Koboyashi 3, Perez 4
Vergne 5, Ricciardo 2
Senna 5, Maldonaldo 2
Petrov 3, Kovalainen 4
Glock 7, Pic 0
de la Rosa 6, Kartikeyan 0
Carry on.

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
I'm not arguing with your decision, but I personally thought Canada gave us the most exciting race of the year so far. Perhaps that's because I am always looking for a battle at the front, no matter what happens behind. In China, Rosberg led from start to finish and ended up with a 20-second advantage over his nearest challenger, while in Canada the race lead changed hands regularly thanks to a variety of different strategies. Hamilton had to put on a charge to catch Vettel and Alonso at the end, and even once he had returned to first place, he wasn't that far ahead of Grosjean.
Also, I think it's looking increasingly likely that Red Bull will win the WCC. They're the only team with two drivers regularly in the higher points-scoring positions. Massa had a terrible start to the year and Button has gone off the boil completely, while Schumacher has had a lot of bad luck and Lotus are inconsistent.

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
I can't agree with you that Monaco was more exciting than Canada overall. The very nature of Monaco was never going to allow any overtaking except in the pitstops. At Canada we had overtaking, even if it was helped along by the DRS.hopeful traveller wrote:Well, Neil, Monaco 2011 was exciting when Button was on MUCH fresher tyres!

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
OK, time for the update from Valencia.
Who will win the Driver's Championship?
Although it's been a bit crazy just recently, it appears to be a toss up now between Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel. The others are starting to fall away, despite the number of points still up for grabs. I'd say Alonso now, myself.
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
Red Bull were pulling away in this, but Ferrari only have on regular big points scorer, so it might not be them, even if Alonso does the business.
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
Not bad this time out - getting closer, as is Grosjean.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
Second place remains his best.
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
Grosjean, duh.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
Caterham were, at one point in this race, running 10th with Petrov, but conspired to throw it away. But they remain the team to beat in this category, with a 13th place.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
Timo Glock becomes the first driver to bite the dust this year, posting a DNS at Valencia due to ill health. BUT, as he was NOT replaced by anyone, it doesn't count! Game on.
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
No moaning this weekend. Situation normal.
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
Still no idea, but contract time is approaching fast, and all three of the top teams have drivers out of contract.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
It might just be swinging towards a "walkover", if that term could be applied to two or three drivers winning all the remaining races, but I think we can put 2012 down as a close battle.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
Glock's DNS at Valencia doesn't really count towards this, as it wasn't the team's fault. I'm not sure if they had a reserve driver or not, but no one stepped in. So for the purposes of this competition ALL 20 cars are still very much in. And in any case, it's not as if Marussia can't afford to run the car again for the rest of the year.
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
Alonso looks a safe bet for this, so long as he can finish well at Silverstone.
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
So Monaco was the most boring race before this, and the two races are often compared with each other. But this one was much better, so the status quo remains (isn't that tautology?)

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
The car was fielded at the Grand Prix, just in practice sessions, so I agree with your interpretation. There was probably a technical reason why Marussia couldn't put a reserve driver in the car.tubeguru wrote:Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?

I was going to argue with you, but then I remember that I put this in the first post:

Re: 2012 Formula One Side Competition
Update from Silverstone:
Who will win the Driver's Championship?
Things are now starting to settle down. Button is out of it, and Hamilton is losing ground. Alonso, Vettel and Webber are the most likely possibilities as it stands.
Who will win the Constructor's Championship?
Red Bull probably.
Will Michael Schumacher win a GP?
No one knows. It's almost as if he is nearly there with the car, but he can't get a break.
What will Kimi Raikkonen's highest finishing position be?
Second place remains his best.
Who will be top rookie? This year's rookies are Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean.
Grosjean.
Which of the three "new" teams will finish highest in the Constructor's Championship? If none of these teams scores points, the most successful will be the team with the highest finishing position. The teams in question are the three newest teams in F1: Caterham, HRT and Marussia.
Caterham managed 17th, so nowhere near the benchmark.
Which driver will be the first to be replaced this season for any reason?
No replacements here, despite Petrov's DNS.
What will be the year's biggest row (technical/personal/whatever - your choice)?
This year is almost boring now. No one's complaining about anything!
How many races will take place before Red Bull and/or Ferrari announce that they're dropping Mark Webber and/or Felipe Massa respectively for 2013?
Red Bull are opening contract talks with Mark Webber soon, so it looks like he may stay. Massa, despite his rejuvenated form of late, remains the favourite to be replaced, but no word on any announcement yet.
Driver's Championship: walkover or close battle? I will determine whether a "walkover" or "close battle" was achieved at the end of the season.
Close battle all the way now. Even if Alonso wins every remaining race.
Will all the teams complete the season (i.e. field two cars at all 20 GPs)?
As with Glock at Valencia, Caterham's DNS for Petrov was a result of outside factors, and not because of the lack of money. So nothing changes here.
Who will be leading the Driver's Championship after the German GP (the halfway point of the season)?
Alonso is 13 points ahead of Mark Webber going into the German GP. Unless he has a nightmare, I think the safe money is on Alonso for this one.
What will be the most exciting and boring races of the year?
Well it wasn't boring, but it wasn't the most exciting, despite the chaos that ensues thanks to the differing tyre choices. It comes in the middle somewhere, so the status quo is retained.
Most exciting: China. Most boring: Monaco.
