Random 15 Round 4.5 - 29th March 2014

Me and TC95 are going to hold a mini Random 15 on the 29th of March. This will not count towards the championship in any way, it is just an afternoon of "underground fun".

It will be a twist round, with an extra list of 15 banned stations, and "15 stations from 20" as well. The banned stations will be:
Finsbury Park (LU)
Chalk Farm
Southwark
North Acton
Manor House
Sloane Square
St. John's Wood
Queensway
Wood Lane
Pimlico
West Brompton
Knightsbridge
Clapham North
High Street Kensington
Green Park

Turnham Green, Stamford Brook and Ravenscourt Park are excluded from the draw due to engineering work. Hyde Park Corner will also be excluded from the draw as both Green Park and Knightsbridge are banned.
So, is anyone in? Apart from the two of us, of course.

I know many of you cannot make this, but still hoping for someone apart from the two of us...

I should be able to make it for this one.

Event Details

Date: Saturday 29th March 2014
Time: Meet up at 1225 for a 1230 prompt start
Starting station: VICTORIA, meet up in the District and Circle Line Ticket Hall (which is just off either Terminus Place or Victoria Street, NOT the one inside the NR station)
Post-challenge meetup: the Bree Louise (nearest tubes Euston and Euston Square)
Time Limit: 5 hours (you may need that extra hour!!)

Track closures:
District: West Kensington - Richmond/Acton Town
Piccadilly: Hammersmith - Ealing Common, Rayners Lane - Uxbridge
Overground: Richmond - Willesden Junction

The twists:
- Station selection: 15 from 20, however, these 15 must include the starting station!
- 15 banned stations: Finsbury Park, Manor House, Chalk Farm, Southwark, Clapham North, North Acton, High Street Kensington, West Brompton, Sloane Square, Pimlico, Green Park, Knightsbridge, Queensway, Wood Lane and St John's Wood.

You may NOT visit a banned station by any mode of transport. If you do so, your result is invalidated. Remember, this includes both LU and LO! You will be reminded of the 15 stations immediately prior to the start.

Hi,

Can a couple of things I've just thought of be clarified please?

1. Accidental / Unintended visiting of stations on the "banned" list.
There are two situations whereby you might end up visiting a banned station unintentionally.
a) Simply not paying attention and going past where you where intending to get off.
b) The final station before a banned station being closed unexpectedly. e.g. I'm travelling south from Green Park to Victoria, with Pimlico as a "banned" station, but Victoria gets closed so the train doesn't stop there.
In each of these cases is it allowed to double-back at the banned station to the last permitted station and carry on?
There is an obvious penalty built into this that you're having to do extra on your route, so I'm guessing this is allowed.

2. Busses
Is it permitted to be on a bus that goes past (and has a stop) for one of the banned stations?
I assume that it is fine to be on a bus that does this, so long as you don't change bus routes at the banned station stop but would appreciate if there was a ruling mainly because my bus knowledge is rubbish and I don't want to accidentally stuff it up.

1) How about this:
If you visit a banned station accidentally, no visits count until you have reversed back along your route to before you hit the banned station (e.g. if you go from Imperial Wharf to Earls Court via the District at Olympia (West Brompton is banned) you must go back to Olympia via District and back down to Imperial Wharf again).

2) What exactly is banned?
You may not:
- Visit a banned station according to GWR style rules on any train
- Stand (or sit, walk, run etc.) in the fare-paying area (usually past the barriers) of a banned station
- Be on a rail replacement bus when it calls outside a banned station

Note: Although Hyde Park Corner is out of bounds for GWR visiting (with Green Park and Knightsbridge banned), you may still enter the fare-paying area should you so desire.

You may pass through a banned station which is under planned closure for your train (e.g. Embankment MAY be passed through on the Bakerloo even if it is banned, same with Covent Garden). If Ravenscourt Park was banned and you were on a Piccadilly Line train that happened to call there, that would be allowed as well.

Sounds reasonable to me.

I'm not sure these two twists work well together. It seems that any "difficult" stations such as Fulham Broadway or Clapham South will just simply be ignored by everyone so it may actually end up like a fairly normal R15.

OK. Actual rail replacement bus services are quite rare so shouldn't be a problem.

I'm probably absolutely the last person to work this out, but at least there isn't going to be any ambiguity about which direction to take a train out of Victoria.

Yes, the awkward outside ones (like Belsize Park and Clapham Common) will simply be ignored, and then Latimer Road and West Kensington will cause havoc.

And yes, A2, that's exactly why we're meeting in the District and Circle Line ticket hall - for a nice quick start.

Just to confirm, stations must be visited by LU, and not NR, in order to be counted as a 'visit'?

Yes, they MUST be visited by LU, as usual Random 15 Rules.
